Two Players, One Keyboard: The Games on This Site That Work on a School Chromebook

Most of the games on houseofhazards.io are built for two people on one keyboard, which is why they get played at lunch. Not all of them behave the same on a school laptop. This is what we found testing the line-up on a low-end Chromebook.

Runs well as-is

• House of Hazards — a Unity build, but a light one. Player 1 is on A/D/W/S, Player 2 on J/L/I/K. Close other tabs if the ragdolls stutter.
• Rooftop Snipers, Basket Random, Soccer Random, Volley Random — one or two keys each, no graphics load to speak of. W and the Up arrow are the usual pair.
• 12 MiniBattles and 12 MiniBattles 2 — every mini-game is a single key per player, so they run on anything.
• Big Shot Boxing, Sumo Party, MiniBattles — small 2D builds; Sumo Party and MiniBattles take up to four and six players on one keyboard.

Keys to know before you start

Nearly all of these use the same convention: the left-hand player on WASD (W to jump or act), the right-hand player on the arrow keys or IJKL. House of Hazards shows each seat's keys on the Choose Amount screen and lets you add a third and fourth player; MiniBattles and the Random games tell you the two keys on the title screen. Sit so that the two of you are at opposite ends of the keyboard.

Stopping the browser from stealing keys

Chrome uses Space to scroll the page and the arrow keys to move it, and a game only receives those keys once it has focus. Click inside the game frame once before you start, and use the fullscreen button under the player rather than the browser's zoom if the frame is small. If the game still ignores a key, one of you is probably holding a modifier — Search or Ctrl — which Chrome OS treats as a shortcut.

If a game will not load

Reload once: WebGL builds sometimes fail to get a graphics context on the first try on a laptop that has been asleep. If a game stays black after a second attempt, tell us through the contact page and we will swap the copy.
