Virtual Piano on this page is PianoPlays, a free piano keyboard that runs in the browser at pianoplays.com. It is not a game with levels or a score: it is an instrument you play from your computer keyboard, set against a starry Milky Way background photo. The site also runs a Russian-language edition, and the build itself contains interface text for English, German, French and Russian.

What you see

The screen is split in two. Across the middle runs a thin overview strip showing the whole keyboard, which reaches up to the top C of a full-size piano, C8. Below it, a row of large white and black keys shows the section you are currently playing.

Playing with the keyboard

The large keys carry letter labels that show which computer key plays them, laid out like a two-row piano:

• White keys, lower octave: Z, X, C, V, B, N and M.
• Black keys above them: S and D, then G, H and J.
• White keys, upper octave: Q, W, E, R, T, Y and U.
• Black keys above them: 2 and 3, then 5, 6 and 7.

So the bottom letter row of a QWERTY keyboard plays one octave of white notes, the home row supplies its sharps and flats, and the top letter row with the number keys above it repeats the pattern one octave higher. That gives two full octaves under your fingers at once. The build also includes an octave switch that moves the labelled range up or down the keyboard, one octave per step.

Tips for getting started

• Start with the white keys from Z to M. Played in order they form a plain major scale with no black keys, which makes simple tunes easy to find.
• Rest your left hand on the bottom row and your right hand on the top row to play a bass note and a melody together.
• If a tune needs a sharp or flat, look one row up from the white key it sits next to; the black keys follow the same gaps as on a real piano.
